CECILIAVILLE X SAY DETROIT PARTNERSHIP

A BRIGHT FUTURE

Downtown Detroit’s renaissance over the past decade has been nothing short of remarkable—but that same energy belongs in the heart of our city: our neighborhoods.

Now, that next chapter is taking shape.

SAY Detroit is launching a transformative investment in Detroit’s future through the acquisition and redevelopment of the historic St. Cecilia campus. What was once one of the most iconic spaces in Detroit’s basketball and community history will be reimagined as a state-of-the-art center for youth development, academic enrichment, leadership, and recreation on the city’s west side.

Backed by a multimillion-dollar campaign and in collaboration with civic and community leaders, this project will restore a near-sacred Detroit landmark—“The Saint”—while creating a modern, high-impact resource serving thousands of young people and families.

A LEGACY REIMAGINED

St. Cecilia’s is more than a building—it’s part of Detroit’s story.

Founded in 1921, with its gym opening in the early 1930s, this space became a proving ground for legends like Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Chris Webber, and countless others. For generations, it served as a safe haven for youth, shaped by leaders who recognized the power of community, discipline, and opportunity.

Today, SAY Detroit is committed to honoring that legacy while bringing it back to life—restoring the campus as a vibrant hub where history fuels future impact.

A PROVEN MODEL, EXPANDED

For over a decade, the SAY Detroit Play Center at Lipke Park has demonstrated what’s possible when young people are given the right support:

  • 100% graduation rate for the Class of 2025

  • 100% improvement in reading proficiency among literacy cohorts

  • 92% retention in summer programming

  • Youth served from more than 50 schools

  • Transportation provided to over 70% of participants—removing barriers to access

At SAY Play, academics come first—every student completes learning sessions before stepping onto the court or into creative spaces. Coaches and teachers serve as mentors, guiding students both in and beyond the classroom.

Now, that same model is coming to Detroit’s west side.

THE VISION

The redeveloped St. Cecilia campus will become a comprehensive, purpose-built center designed to meet the real needs of Detroit families—spanning approximately 8 acres and featuring over 25,000 square feet of learning and community space.

Planned program areas include:

  • Academic Success Wing – tutoring, literacy, and educational support

  • STEM & Digital Innovation Labs – preparing students for the future workforce

  • Arts, Music, and Cultural Development – creative expression rooted in community

  • Athletics & Health – anchored by the historic gym

  • Workforce, Leadership, and Life Skills Training

  • Family Empowerment Hub – resources that strengthen entire households

  • Community & Multi-Use Spaces – flexible areas shaped by local needs

This is more than a gym. It’s a pathway—to education, to opportunity, to stability.

“If there is one center that means something to longtime Detroiters, it’s St. Cecilia’s…That gym and that school have been sitting vacant for a long time… You want to do something that would mean something to the basketball tradition of this city, the neighborhood tradition of this city—this is it.”

— Mike Duggan, former city of Detroit mayor
